Seniors Rock Tech
It all started with my grandmother. We are extremely close and a few years ago I became her go-to “tech friend.” She felt comfortable asking me all her “how to” questions related to using mobile technology. In other words, how to use her smartphone. I helped her learn how to operate both the iPhone and the iPad. This boosted her self confidence and made her independent and socially very active. She researches products, recipes and also keeps up to speed on national as well as international news and events. In addition to being socially connected with family and her many friends, she plays crossword puzzles and word games on her iPad. This keeps her very mentally active.
I took this a step further… I have been meeting regularly, usually on Sundays, with elderly citizens in my community. We meet individually or in groups of up to 8. In these sessions, I mainly train them on the use of smartphones, tablets and computers. I leave them with something new or with some tech task to think about, offering tips and answer any questions that they may have.
Since I’m interested in Cybersecurity, and even taking a class at high school, I know how important it is to teach my “students” about online safety. I especially talk about how to:
Install anti-virus and internet security software.
Think before clicking any link or sharing on social media.
Build strong passwords.
Secure email, bank and other critical accounts with two-factor authentication.
Enable spam filters in email accounts.
Log out when done.
As their “tech friend” I make myself available to them, so that they can ask me questions anytime.
